Peterborough Regional Health Centre is celebrating a major milestone in its $70-million fundraising campaign after unveiling a $6-million upgrade to its interventional radiology department, funded entirely through community donations.
Donors, hospital leaders and the PRHC Foundation gathered Tuesday for a tour of the expanded and modernized IR suites, which are now equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology. The investment includes upgrades to two existing suites, the creation of a third high-demand procedure room, and an expanded recovery area that now accommodates 14 patients.
Lesley Heighway, president and CEO of the PRHC Foundation, called the development “a transformative moment for patient care,” crediting donor generosity for giving specialists the tools needed to perform more complex minimally invasive procedures close to home.
Interventional radiologist Dr. Fady Abdelsayed said the advancements will improve outcomes for patients requiring treatments for conditions such as cancer, stroke, bleeding and trauma. PRHC’s five interventional radiologists previously performed over 6,000 procedures annually; the upgraded facilities now allow care for 20 to 25 patients per day.
As a regional hospital serving more than 300,000 residents across central and eastern Ontario, PRHC says the investment will help meet rising demand, attract medical talent and support future innovations.
Hospital CEO Dr. Lynn Mikula thanked donors, noting their “vision and support” continue to drive innovation.
