Parking restrictions and several downtown road closures will be in place this Saturday as the city prepares for the Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade.
Parking along the parade route on George Street North will be prohibited starting at 1:30pm on Saturday. No-parking signs will go up that morning, and enforcement will be in effect. Vehicles left in restricted areas after 1:30pm will be ticketed, towed, and impounded at the owner’s expense. Anyone needing information about a towed vehicle can contact the City’s Municipal Law Enforcement and Security Services Division the next business day at 705-707-3969.
The city is encouraging parade-goers to use nearby municipal lots and garages, including the Simcoe parking garage, King Street Parkade, Chambers Lot, Reid Lot, Gas Lot, Del Crary Lot, and Downie Lot. Free two-hour parking is currently available at all downtown municipal lots as part of a holiday promotion supporting Kawartha Food Share.
George Street will close from Parkhill Road to Brock Street at 4:15pm for parade staging. The parade begins at McDonnel Street at 5:15pm, with Peterborough Police overseeing a rolling road closure as the procession heads south on George Street toward Lansdowne Street.
Additional closures beginning at 4:15pm include Antrim, Edinburgh, Dublin, London, McDonnel, and Murray streets between Aylmer and Water; Princess Street from George to Park; and Aylmer Street from Lansdowne to Romaine. Local access will be allowed for residents and emergency vehicles. All closures are expected to reopen by 8pm.
Peterborough Transit will detour around George Street starting at 3:30pm, affecting routes 2, 4, 6, 9, 22, and 23. Riders can find updates through Transit Service Alerts or the city’s transit webpage.
A Peterborough Petes home game is scheduled for 7:05pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. With the parade affecting traffic—particularly the closure on Aylmer Street—fans are encouraged to allow extra travel time. Arena doors open at 6pm.
