Want to know more about somebody? Spend a day in their shoes.
The Council for Persons with Disabilities marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with an interactive event at the Peterborough YMCA on Dec. 3.
More than 160 students in Grades 5, 6 and 8 from Kaawaate East City Public School took part in “A Day in My Shoes,” a program that simulates the daily experiences of people living with disabilities.
CPD chair Cody McIntyre says the event is designed to build empathy and understanding among young people.
Students had the chance to rotate through interactive stations focused on mobility, vision, hearing, communication and inclusive living.
The Council says the event also highlights the importance of barrier-free communities.
McIntyre says his own lived experience shapes how he approaches the work.
McIntyre notes that while local strides matter, achieving a truly barrier-free society could still take generations.
