Every donation to the Peterborough Humane Society can be doubled this Giving Tuesday, allowing gifts to go twice as far in supporting animals in need. One recent rescue shows exactly how those contributions can save lives.
In June, a dog who had been thrown from a second-storey window and left running loose for hours was rescued by Animal Services and brought to the Peterborough Humane Society. At the shelter, staff made sure she was safe and comfortable. The next morning, an animal care attendant discovered that the dog had given birth to a single puppy. The mother was not producing milk and had already pushed the pup aside.
The tiny puppy, later named Maggie, was cold, dehydrated, and barely moving. Humane Society staff immediately began providing round-the-clock care, creating a warm space and starting bottle feeding. One staff member even took Maggie home for two weeks to provide the constant supervision she needed to survive.
Once Maggie was strong enough, she went into foster care with local supporters who helped her learn to eat, walk, and go to the bathroom, guided every step of the way by Humane Society staff. Today, Maggie is thriving, a testament to the care and resources made possible by donations.
Until December 31, all donations to the Peterborough Humane Society will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000, by local supporters Lloyd and Elaine, effectively doubling the impact of every gift. Donations support essential veterinary care, supplies, and staff expertise for animals like Maggie, helping the Humane Society continue its life-saving work.
