Peterborough Housing Corporation has reopened a fully rebuilt residential complex in Havelock, more than a year after a major fire displaced tenants and left the building uninhabitable.
PHC says 37 George Street East has undergone a complete restoration since the April 2024 fire, with the property now meeting modern safety, energy, and accessibility standards. Displaced residents were offered the chance to return when the building reopens on December 8th, alongside new tenants.
“This restoration represents more than the reopening of a building — it represents the resilience of the Havelock community,” said PHC chief executive Travis Doak. “We are proud to return this important housing resource to residents and to provide a safe, modern and welcoming place to call home.”
Upgrades include improved insulation, enhanced soundproofing, high-efficiency heating, and updated plumbing and electrical systems. The reconstruction also features new energy-efficient windows and doors, a redesigned roof, and refreshed brickwork and siding aimed at strengthening the building’s structure and extending its lifespan.
PHC says the improvements were made with a focus on long-term comfort, lower utility costs, and improved security for current and future residents.
