Lakelands Public Health is issuing a seasonal reminder that smoking and vaping are banned on or within 20 metres of all arena property under Ontario’s Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017.
With winter sports underway, the agency says Tobacco Enforcement Officers will increase patrols at local arenas. Officers use a progressive enforcement approach — issuing warnings first, followed by charges if behaviour continues. The fine for smoking or vaping on arena property is $305.
Dr. Thomas Piggott, Medical Officer of Health, says second-hand smoke and vapour pose serious health risks and should not be present where families gather. Smoke-free zones also help prevent youth from starting to smoke or vape.
Residents can report violations by calling 1-844-575-4567, with anonymous complaints accepted.
