Peterborough is revisiting the long-standing tradition of free parking at Riverview Park & Zoo – at least for non-residents of the city.
During budget talks, councillors voted 6-5 to direct staff to study parking fees and other revenue streams for the popular attraction.
The motion was brought forward by Gary Baldwin based on a suggestion made by Larry MacDonald.
Baldwin adds it’s important to always be looking for ways to keep costs low for taxpayers.
Mayor Jeff Leal and councillors Andrew Beamer, Dave Haacke, Lesley Parnell and Keith Riel supported the motion from Coun. Gary Baldwin. Opposed were councillors Alex Bierk, Joy Lachica, Don Vassiliadis, Kevin Duguay and Matt Crowley.
City staff say Riverview is heavily used and parking fees could help manage congestion. They noted St. Catharines offers a model where free parking passes are provided only to residents.
The report would go to the next council in 2027.
