With the Peterborough Singers founding artistic director set to retire in a few weeks, a fundraising campaign is now underway to establish a legacy fund named in his honour.
On December 14th and 15th, Syd Birrell will conduct Handel’s Messiah at Emmanuel United Church, bringing to a close 35 years at the choral’s group’s helm. Over that time, Birrell has conducted more than 100 concerts, cementing the Peterborough Singers’ reputation as one of Canada’s preeminent community choirs.
Now, Syd’s Legacy Fund, with a goal of $250,000, has been established to create an endowment fund as well as enhance the Singers’ in-season activities.
Birrell says the decision to retire was difficult, but it’s time.
Speaking to the legacy fund, Birrell says it well help ensure the sustainability of the choir as well as the quality of the performances, and for those reasons, he was totally on board.
Birrell is confident the Peterborough Singers’ will be in very good hands moving forward.
