Bonnerworth Park officially reopened Saturday with a weekend of free activities and demonstrations, marking the completion of a year-long redevelopment project that began in fall 2024.
The redesigned park at 560 McDonnel St. features a new bike pump track, expanded skateboard park, 14 pickleball courts and a shaded seating area. The upgrades come as part of a larger recreation plan that included removing Bonnerworth’s former baseball fields and tennis courts, with new diamonds being added elsewhere and replacement tennis courts planned for Knights of Columbus Park.
Mayor Jeff Leal says this development is part of Peterborough’s future.
As city officials cut the ribbon, members of Friends of Bonnerworth Park staged a peaceful protest, asking attendees to wear ‘funeral black’ to mourn the park’s transformation. Group members say they were promised speaking time before being removed from the ceremony program.
We spoke with Spokesperson John Gerelus at the event.
Despite the tensions, city staff encouraged residents to explore the new features and enjoy free activities throughout the weekend. Highlights include bike track demonstrations Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., skateboard sessions Sunday afternoon, and pickleball lessons.
On Monday, Nov. 10, residents can try pickleball from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with instruction and equipment provided, or take part in a pop-up bike event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. featuring safety checks and cycling tips.
Leal thanks the community behind the project.
