With Halloween arriving tonight, many parents are wondering if their kids will eat too much candy. Registered dietitian Emily Szatrowski says there’s no need to worry.
One of her top tips is to serve a filling dinner with protein before heading out for trick-or-treating and then lets the kids enjoy their treats when they get home.
Szatrowski warns that hiding or tossing candy can backfire, making children more protective of their stash and creating unhealthy habits around food. She adds that one night of sweets isn’t going to harm kids, and restricting candy can actually make them crave it more.
In the days after Halloween, she says it’s perfectly fine to treat candy as regular food, helping children develop a balanced relationship with treats.
