The Township of Selwyn says Queen Street in Lakefield has reopened, marking a major step forward in the community’s recovery from the recent fire.
Following significant progress on the demolition of the fire-damaged buildings, the contractor has confirmed that work can safely continue without keeping Queen Street closed.
While the street will reopen, the demolition site itself will remain fenced off as crews complete backfilling to create a level, secure area. The sidewalk in front of the affected properties will stay closed, but the township says on-street parking spaces will temporarily serve as a pedestrian walkway to maintain access to nearby businesses.
Burnham Street between Queen Street and Charlotte Street, including the sidewalk, will remain closed as demolition work continues. However, access from the Charlotte and Burnham intersection to the Divine Craft parking area will be available.
Two streetlights removed during firefighting efforts will be reinstalled once demolition is finished.
“Reopening Queen Street represents a positive milestone for our community,” said Mayor Sherry Senis. “Although the streetscape will look very different for some time, we are encouraged by the resilience and spirit that Lakefield continues to demonstrate.”
The township is encouraging residents and visitors to continue supporting local businesses as the area recovers.
