A familiar face from the Peterborough sports scene is stepping onto the NHL stage. Sean Young, an Ennismore native and St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School alum, has joined the Pittsburgh Penguins organization and worked his first game Tuesday night, a 5–1 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
Young had been with OHL’s Ottawa 67’s since 2018, serving as their Strength and Conditioning Coach before being promoted to Director of Conditioning ahead of the 2023–24 season. Over seven seasons, he played a central role in player development, working closely with athletes on and off the ice to optimize performance.
His experience extends beyond junior hockey. Since 2021, Young has been part of Hockey Canada’s support staff at four consecutive IIHF World Junior Championships and has been named to Canada’s men’s team staff for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Off the ice, Young runs the Canadian Strength Institute, where he trains athletes nationwide. A former national track and field competitor, he also served as a guide runner for visually impaired sprinters, earning the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his contributions to the Paralympic movement.
Whether on the ice, on the bench, or behind the scenes, Peterborough-area talent continues to shine in the NHL. Young’s jump to the big league puts another local stamp on hockey’s highest stage.
