The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police is calling on Premier Doug Ford to keep automated speed enforcement cameras, saying they play a key role in reducing speeding and protecting pedestrians, particularly children.
OACP President Mark Campbell explains that these cameras help change driver behaviour and make roads safer.
The Association’s push for automated speed enforcement dates back to 2021, when it recommended the cameras as one tool to improve road safety. Campbell acknowledges some of the Premier’s points on community safety but warns that removing the cameras would put pedestrians at risk. He elaborates:
Campbell says although he disagrees with Ford’s decision, he understands the Premier’s reasoning. Here’s more from him:
Peterborough currently does not have any automated speed enforcement cameras in place. However, prior to Ford’s announcement to remove them, the city had plans to install cameras in the near future.
