Fire crews have successfully contained a large structure fire in the Village of Lakefield, though several road closures and cleanup efforts remain in effect as the community begins recovery efforts.
Queen Street remains fully closed between Albert and Reid streets, as does Burnham Street between Queen and Charlotte. Portions of Queen and Charlotte streets are open to local traffic only, while Water Street has reopened.
Selwyn Township officials are urging residents and visitors to remain cautious, as emergency crews are still on scene. Most downtown businesses are open, except for Lakefield IDA, which sustained extensive water and smoke damage. Parking is limited to the municipal lot beside The Village Inn, with customers asked to walk to nearby businesses.
“On behalf of Council and the entire community, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters and emergency responders who worked tirelessly to contain this fire and keep our residents safe,” said Selwyn Mayor Sherry Senis. “The response from our local and neighbouring departments exemplifies the strength of collaboration and community spirit that defines Selwyn Township. Our hearts go out to the affected residents and business owners as we work together to support recovery in the days ahead.”
