The City of Peterborough is encouraging residents to reduce waste and reuse materials throughout October as part of Circular Economy Month.
Mayor Jeff Leal has officially proclaimed October as Circular Economy Month, highlighting ways to keep unwanted items out of the landfill by participating in the community’s share-reuse-repair network.
Municipal Operations Co-Chairs Keith Riel and Don Vassiliadis said the initiative is about finding creative ways to extend the life of everyday items. “This month is all about keeping unwanted items out of the landfill, reducing waste and sharing resources with friends and neighbours,” they stated. “Whether it’s repurposing, reusing, upcycling or recycling, Circular Economy Month is a great way to give old or unwanted items a second or even a third life.”
Residents can take part by borrowing materials from the Peterborough Public Library, swapping items at the Waste Management Facility’s reuse building on Bensfort Road, or sharing products through the Household Hazardous Waste Depot’s reusable product exchange on Pido Road.
Other ways to participate include using Peterborough Transit to cut greenhouse gas emissions and putting food scraps in green bins to divert organics from the landfill.
