Peterborough will welcome a new mural this fall on Water Street, created by local Anishinaabe artist Josh Morley (Miskopwagan Asin), highlighting art, community, and connection.
The project is led by First Friday Peterborough, the volunteer-run group behind the city’s monthly downtown art crawl, and supported by local sponsors. The mural will be painted on Water Street between Key Design Inc. and Scotiabank.
Following a public call for submissions, a jury of local artists and community members selected Morley to bring the project to life. The design features a vibrant composition of interwoven figures embracing, symbolizing support, connection, and optimism.
“The hug is a universal symbol. It’s an action of support, connection and optimism – values that reflect the strength of the Peterborough community,” said Morley. “Through this mural, I hope to encourage us all to keep showing up for one another… my wish is that this piece not only inspires those feelings but also adds to the vitality and beauty of our downtown.”
Ashley Hall, a mural jury member and local artist, added, “Choosing just one artist from so many beautiful proposals was not easy… I’m excited to see this mural bring vitality back to the space and reflect the values of connection, inclusivity, and love.”
The mural will be completed this fall, with an unveiling during the October First Friday Art Crawl on October 3 at 6pm. The project was made possible with support from Ashburnham Realty, Rapid Lift, JBR Paint and Repair, and the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area.
