An annual event that aims to ensure better outcomes for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer returns to Nicholls Oval Park this Sunday (September 7).
Check-in for the Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope begins at 10 a.m. at the park pavilion with the walk itself starting shortly after the 11 a.m. opening ceremony. Registration, for the 2.5 or the 5 kilometre route, can be done online.
Among those participating is Paul Plant, who has set a fundraising goal of $2,000. To help spur on donations, he is again walking the 5 kilometre distance while balancing a canoe over his head. Very much on his mind will be his wife Karen, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2017 and passed two years later.
Plant says the walk not only supports those who have received an ovarian cancer diagnosis but also raises money for vital research.
While some 3,000 Canadians are annually diagnosed with ovarian cancer – half of whom will die within years – it receives less attention than other forms of cancer, making events like this even more important.
