The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers edged the Brooklin Lacrosse Club 9-8 Wednesday night to take the season series two games to one.
The Lakers opened the season with a win at Iroquois Park in May, then beat the Six Nations Chiefs in their home opener the following night. They return home Thursday to face the first-place Chiefs again at the Memorial Centre. Game time is 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the Grant Thornton Box Office.
“We’re going to battle,” said head coach Mike Hasen. “I thought we battled all night long here tonight. A couple seeing-eye shots late closed the gap, but we had a really good effort tonight and we’re going to do the same thing tomorrow.”
The game started tight, with both teams tied 1-1 after the first period. Justin Sykes scored the Lakers’ lone goal.
The second period saw the Lakers pull ahead with a five-goal run. Brooklin responded with two goals, but the Lakers answered each time. Jacob Hickey scored late in the period to cut the Lakers’ lead to 8-4.
Brooklin opened the third with a four-goal run, tying the game by the 16-minute mark on a goal from Sean Westley.
Shortly after, Jake Withers won the faceoff and the Lakers rushed up the floor. Mitch Ogilvie scored his first goal of the season just 15 seconds after the tie to reclaim the lead.
“[Thomas Hoggarth] got the ball out and I came down the side and no one was there. I just stepped down and shot as hard as I could,” Ogilvie said of the game-winning goal.
Nick Rose made 33 saves for the Lakers. Zach Higgins faced 41 shots for Brooklin in the loss. Brooklin was led by Jacob Hickey and Taggart Clark, who each scored twice.
The Lakers move four points ahead of Brooklin in the standings but remain second, six points behind the Chiefs, with five regular season games remaining.
