The Peterborough Petes have awarded their 2025 Education Fund Scholarships to forward Cameron Meek of the Petes U18 AAA and blueliner Hannah McInnes of the Peterborough IceKats U18 AA.
“The Peterborough Petes Education Fund was established by former board member Pat Casey in the late 1970s,” Petes vice‑president Rod McGillis said Thursday while announcing the winners. “Pat always knew that education was a critical part of the program and his work allows these scholarships to continue for today’s athletes.”
Meek, a Port Perry native and captain of the U18 Petes, called the scholarship “an honour,” adding that his coaches’ belief “helped me be better every single day both on and off the ice.” Head coach Scott Roche praised the two‑year veteran as an “exceptional leader” whose work ethic and positivity lifted team morale.
McInnes, a Grade 12 student at St. Peter Secondary, said she felt “very fortunate and grateful” to earn the award as she wraps up minor hockey and heads to the University of Guelph in the fall. IceKats coach and Petes alumnus Cameron Mann lauded her as “a true role model” whose commitment benefits teammates on and off the ice.
The Education Fund, overseen by McGillis along with alumnus Mike Martone and Laura Kennedy, selects one scholarship recipient each year from the U18 Petes and IceKats based on coaches’ recommendations. In addition, the fund donates six $500 scholarships annually—one to every local high school—to recognize graduating students who have shown improvement through hard work, whether or not they play sports.
