A Peterborough city council-approved commitment to spend $8.1 million over the next five years to maintain the Queen Alexandra Community Centre is great news for the building’s primary tenant.
The centre on Barnardo Street has been home to Activity Haven for 40 of its 50 years, where more than 1,300 seniors currently partake in programming, both active and of a more passive nature.
Activity Haven board president Mark Tinkler says the city’s investment in the building lifts any uncertainty around where its programming will be offered, adding, for some, a connection has been forged with the building where they once went to school.
With the future of the centre now clearer, Tinkler says Activity Haven can move forward with greater confidence in terms of any building investments it’s planning to undertake.
Meanwhile, Tinkler says planning is going ahead for the 50th anniversary of Activity Haven, with a public event planned for August.
