A group of concerned citizens gathered outside Peterborough City Hall on Monday evening, pushing for transparency and accountability in the wake of a recent council decision not to penalize Mayor Jeff Leal.
The protest — dubbed the Rally for Integrity — followed a June 2 vote where councillors rejected a recommendation to reprimand the mayor after an Integrity Commissioner found he had intimidated one councillor and bullied another.
Rally organizer Danielle Turpin says the goal was to send a clear message to council ahead of Monday night’s meeting.
Turpin, who co-runs a worker co-op and is active in the community, says the rally reflects a broader frustration with how residents feel their voices are being disregarded.
She says she hopes this moment sparks greater political engagement — and possibly new candidates in the next municipal election.
Turpin adds that she loves how the community always comes together and stands up for what they believe in.
Monday’s demonstration came as councillors reconvened for the first time since the controversial vote.
