A boating incident on Sturgeon Lake has claimed the lives of two men.
Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 3 pm Sunday after a canoe carrying three people capsized. One man managed to swim to shore, but the other two were unable to stay afloat and drowned. According to police, there were no life jackets on board.
Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, including the marine and aviation units, responded alongside local fire and EMS crews and conducted search and recovery operations.
Police are reminding the public that wearing a lifejacket or personal floatation device can prevent the majority of boating-related fatalities.
