Hiawatha First Nation is mourning the loss of one of its most notable community builders.
Aileen McCalip died May 29th. She was 88-years-old.
Upon graduating from the former Peterborough Civic Hospital as a registered nurse, McCalip worked in various locations in the United States before moving back to Hiawatha in 1981. Back home, she worked as a prison nurse in Millbrook before becoming Hiawatha’s social services administrator. A Hiawatha council member, McCalip assisted with the design and construction of Hiawatha’s original Life Centre.
