The Ontario Provincial Police is sounding the alarm after reporting the highest number of off-road vehicle deaths in more than a decade.
A total of 34 people died in OPP-investigated off-road incidents in 2024. Half of them weren’t wearing a helmet and nearly as many were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Speed and loss of control were the leading causes.
ATV Safety Awareness Week, which runs through June 8, sees the OPP partnering with the Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs to promote safer riding habits across the province.
Riders are being reminded to always wear an approved helmet, stay sober, and drive within their skill level — particularly on unfamiliar or rough terrain. Regular maintenance is also being stressed as a key safety measure.
Parents are encouraged to enroll young riders in Ontario’s online ATV Training Course for Youth. At the same time, enforcement and education efforts continue across the province’s extensive trail networks through the OPP SAVE Unit.
