The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers are still unbeaten after picking up two more wins on the road to improve to 5-0 in the Major Series Lacrosse season.
The Lakers took down the Owen Sound North Stars 13-10 on Saturday night in Meaford, then capped the weekend with a 13-6 win over the Cobourg Kodiaks on Sunday at the Cobourg Community Centre.
The two victories wrap up a busy stretch of three games in four days for the Lakers, who also edged Brampton 6-5 at home on Thursday.
Rookie defender Frank Coyle made his MSL debut on Saturday and scored his first goal in the league. Coyle, who played Friday night with the Sr. B Ennismore James Gang, didn’t expect to find the net.
“I got sent out for one offensive shift,” said the Jr. A Lakers grad. “I set an off-ball pick for Austin Hasen and turned around and Taite Cattoni had thrown me the ball. I closed my eyes, threw it at the net and it went in.”
The Lakers were without several regulars in Owen Sound due to prior commitments, dressing a short lineup that included five Jr. A Lakers callups: Curtis Ward, Seven Gillingham, Carter Frost, Dylan Lee and Grant Ramsey. Some veterans returned for Sunday’s game in Cobourg, with Nate Sage the only Jr. A call-up in the lineup. Sage made the most of the opportunity, scoring his first two MSL goals and adding an assist.
In Saturday’s game, Peterborough led 7-5 after two periods before the North Stars rattled off five straight goals to open the third. The Lakers answered with six of their own to seal the win. Hasen, Mike Robinson, Brad McCulley, Carter Page and Ward each scored twice. Owen Sound was led by Jackson Webster’s nine-point night and a hat trick from Tanner Buck.
Sunday’s matchup remained tight until the third, when the Lakers broke a 6-4 game wide open with six more goals in the final frame. McCulley, Page, Koleton Marquis and Sage each found the net twice. The Kodiaks got two goals from captain Aaron Woods and three assists from Alex Marinier. Goaltender Jackson Brown stopped 50 shots in the loss, with Peterborough outshooting Cobourg 63-51.
Drew Hutchison played both games in net for the Lakers, making 45 saves on Sunday. Nick Rose backed him up on Saturday, while Deacan Knott dressed on Sunday.
The Lakers return to action on Thursday when they host the Oakville Rock at 8pm from the PMC.
