The Peterborough Jr A Lakers battled to a 10-9 win over the St. Catharines Athletics on the road Wednesday night, climbing to .500 on the season with their second straight victory.
Riley Simpson netted the game-winner with 37 seconds left in the third, breaking a 9-9 tie with an unassisted goal and capping off a back-and-forth contest. Carson Christy and Mason Cree also scored key goals late in the period to help the Lakers rally after giving up three straight to open the final frame.
Peterborough spread the scoring around, with six different goal scorers and 10 players recording at least one point. Nate Sage, Colby Wood, Christy (2), Cree (2), Simpson and Nick Fournier all found the back of the net.
Curtis Ward and Ryder Evans each chipped in with three assists, with singles going to Simpson, Wood, Sage, Hayden Addison, Aiden Parker and Fournier (2). Evans was making his Jr A lacrosse debut after being called up from the U17 Lakers.
Waukiigan Shognosh was spectacular in net once again, making 44 saves and picking up his second career win in as many starts.
The win puts Peterborough at 2-2 on the year, good for fifth place in the OJLL standings heading into a big test on home floor tomorrow night, when they host the first-place Six Nations Arrows (3-1). Game time is 8pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
