The Peterborough Memorial Centre is launching new assistive listening technology to improve accessibility for guests attending live events, particularly those who are Deaf, oral deaf, deafened or hard of hearing.
Debuting on May 22, the system allows users to stream in-venue audio, including public announcements and commentary, through the Listen WIFI app on a smartphone or by using a pre-booked receiver. Audio can be sent directly to hearing aids, cochlear implants or earbuds using Bluetooth.
“Live events are important and meaningful ways for Peterborough’s residents and visitors to find community with people with shared interests, and ultimately foster a sense of belonging for everyone,” said Councillor Lesley Parnell, co-chair of Community Services.
“We’re excited to see this new assistive technology roll out to the Peterborough Memorial Centre where audiences of different ages and abilities can enjoy moments together,” added Councillor Alex Bierk, also co-chair of Community Services.
The technology will expand in the coming months to include access to game play-by-plays, event-specific content and potentially live audio during concerts.
Its launch coincides with the Peterborough Lakers’ season opener on May 22 and comes ahead of the Women’s Major Series Lacrosse provincial championship in August.
“The Peterborough Lakers are proud to play in a venue that’s making live sports more inclusive and accessible,” said Lakers board chair Len Powers. “This new assistive listening technology at the Peterborough Memorial Centre will enhance the fan experience and ensure that more members of our community can share in the excitement, energy, and tradition of Lakers lacrosse—starting with our home opener on May 22.”
The initiative supports the City’s 2024–2028 Accessibility Plan and complements assistive listening services already available at facilities such as Social Services, the Peterborough Transit terminal, City Hall, the Peterborough Public Library, the Art Gallery of Peterborough and the Provincial Offences Court Administration Office.
The launch also comes just ahead of National AccessAbility Week, which runs from May 25 to 31.
