The Ontario Provincial Police say nearly half of all boating fatalities on provincial waterways over the past five years involved paddlers.
Between 2020 and 2024, 56 of the 131 people who died in OPP-investigated boating incidents were paddlers, including 34 canoeists, 17 kayakers, and five stand-up paddleboarders.
Falling overboard and capsized vessels remain the leading causes of boating deaths, with the OPP stressing the importance of wearing a lifejacket. Officials say a properly fitted lifejacket significantly increases the chances of survival, even for those who are unconscious or unable to swim.
Alcohol and drug impairment, inexperience, and hazardous conditions are also key contributing factors.
Safe Boating Awareness Week runs May 17 to 23. OPP marine officers will be patrolling lakes and rivers to promote safety and enforce boating laws.
Ontario’s marine program includes 134 vessels and nearly 400 trained officers covering more than 110,000 square kilometres of waterways.
