The 105th navigation season for the historic Trent-Severn Waterway opens today (May 16) at 10 a.m., with the system’s 386 kilometres, from Trent to Port Severn, set to welcome back boaters new and old.
Open until October 13th, the Parks Canada-administered waterway, and its lock stations and associated parkland, have been prepared for another season and all is ready. That’s the word from Ontario Waterways public relations and communications officer Karen Feeley, who says excitement around the system’s opening remains as high as ever for all involved in its operation.
Feeley says opening the waterway for the season isn’t as simple as flipping a switch.
While several infrastructure upgrades have been made to the waterway in recent years, Feeley says that work never stops.
The waterway saw a slight increase in traffic last season – something that Feeley hopes will continue to tick upward this season.
