A monument honouring the lives of workers lost as a result of occupational cancers and disease will be unveiled June 1st, which is also Injured Workers Day in Ontario.
Located in Millennium Park, A Place To Remember, sculpted by stonemason Jordan Clements, will be a sobering reminder of those who deaths have been attributed, in whole or part, to their employment in workplaces where hazardous chemicals and other toxins were present.
Sue James, the chair of the Peterborough Occupational Disease Committee (PODAC) which has spearheaded this tribute, says her own experience of work-related loss is but one example of what many have gone through.
James says PODAC’s central aim is to ensure those lost due to occupational hazards are not forgotten and are honoured.
James says PODAC’s advocacy for safer working conditions will continue well after the monument is unveiled.
James acknowledges that workers’ safety from hazards has come a long way but there remains work to be done.
