The Peterborough Police Service is warning the public about a scam involving fraudsters posing as officials from government agencies, including the Department of Justice and Immigration and Border Services.
In recent reports, victims were told they were the subject of a complaint or that their identity had been compromised. Scammers then demanded payment to resolve the issue — resulting in a combined loss of approximately $10,000.
Police stress that government agencies and law enforcement do not demand money over the phone or through suspicious methods like cryptocurrency or prepaid gift cards.
Red flags include urgent demands for action, offers to connect with a so-called officer (often another scammer), spoofed government phone numbers, and requests to stay on the line for extended periods. A second scam may follow, claiming to help victims recover their money — but requiring upfront payment.
Anyone targeted is advised to stop communication, cancel cards, notify their bank, and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
Residents of Peterborough, Lakefield, and Cavan-Monaghan who believe they’ve been scammed should contact the Peterborough Police Service directly.
