East City is now part of the Downtown Peterborough Business Improvement Area.
After more than four decades of operating separately, the Village Business Improvement Area (VBIA) has joined the Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) under a one-year pilot merger. The change took effect in April and marks the first time the DBIA’s boundary has extended across the Otonabee River since its formation in 1981.
The merger allows East City businesses along Hunter Street East to access DBIA-led programs and promotions, including popular initiatives like the Boro Gift Card and the Holiday Shopping Passport. It also sets the stage for expanded collaboration on events, beautification, and advocacy efforts.
The VBIA, which has operated as a volunteer-run group, will now work alongside the DBIA to explore the benefits of a shared approach to economic development while maintaining East City’s unique identity.
Throughout the pilot year, the DBIA will engage with East City stakeholders to assess how best to integrate programming and ensure local priorities are reflected in future plans.
