The City of Peterborough is encouraging residents to be ready for emergencies during Emergency Preparedness Week, running until May 10.
This year’s theme is “Be prepared. Know your risks.” The city is highlighting simple steps that can make a difference during severe weather or unexpected events, including creating a household emergency plan, building an emergency kit, and staying informed through reliable sources.
A new tool, Alertable, is now available to help residents receive real-time updates during emergencies. The free system delivers alerts through text messages, phone calls, emails, or app notifications. Residents can choose their preferred method of communication and will receive updates directly from the city.
In addition to Alertable, Peterborough will continue to share emergency information through media releases, social media, and the city’s website.
Residents are encouraged to keep a basic emergency kit with items such as a battery-powered or wind-up flashlight and radio, first aid kit, portable phone charger, bottled water, canned or dried food, manual can opener, extra batteries, cash, blankets, candles, matches, and a list of emergency contacts.
More information is available at getprepared.gc.ca and peterborough.ca/alertable.
