With a changing of the guard in the Liberal Party of Canada, a former local MP is paying tribute to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Maryam Monsef, who served in Trudeau’s Cabinet in several positions including as Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Minister of Democratic Institutions, took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the 23rd Prime Minister for his leadership.
In a post, she said:
“Government matters. Leadership matters. Having a leader who cares, matters. You’ve carried Canada through some very dark times @JustinTrudeau. All the way to your last minute on the job. You’ve elevated the status of women & youth. And put Canada on the path for truth and reconciliation. Canada is strong and united today. Thank you, for your courage, for your hard work, and for giving this Peterborough rep a seat at the big table.”
Trudeau announced his resignation earlier this year and will exit office as the 7th longest serving Prime Minister in Canadian history. Mark Carney has been chosen as his successor, securing the Liberal leadership post with a resounding victory on Sunday.
