In advance of the provincial election on February 27, 2025, Peterborough City Council members are advocating for provincial support and partnership. Council members are highlighting identified priorities for the City of Peterborough and asking for attention in the next government’s mandate.
The Council members urge the upcoming provincial government to prioritize:
- Housing, including affordable housing, transitional housing for individuals who need support, and funding for infrastructure that supports the construction of a wide range of housing
- A new funding model for municipalities that is sustainable and reduces the reliance on property taxes to improve affordability for residents
- Community wellbeing, including investing in primary health care to ensure residents have access to doctors and primary care teams, mental health services, and addiction treatment
- Community safety, including assisting property taxpayers with the cost of policing
With collaboration, there is opportunity to achieve shared success in these key areas.
Like municipalities across the province, the City of Peterborough is facing unprecedented and systemic challenges that require collaboration across levels of governments to find lasting solutions.
Municipalities across Ontario are collectively advocating for a provincial government that will partner with municipalities to strengthen quality of life for residents. Information on the Association of Municipalities of Ontario campaign is available at VoteONqualityoflife.ca.
“Housing, affordability, community wellbeing and public safety are central, critical items for the wellbeing of Peterborough,” Mayor Jeff Leal said. “With the upcoming provincial election, it is essential that these provincial matters are prioritized by the voters and by the candidates seeking your votes. The City of Peterborough will continue to work collaboratively with the Province of Ontario to serve the residents of our community.”
The City of Peterborough calls on candidates from all parties to support these priorities and, if elected, to advance them on Peterborough’s behalf at Queen’s Park.
