This year’s free holiday parking program in downtown Peterborough raised $12,001.77 for Kawartha Food Share, thanks to donations from generous visitors throughout the holiday season.
The City of Peterborough offered two hours of free parking in all municipal spaces downtown from Nov. 29 to Dec. 31, 2024. Sponsored by Wolfe Personal Injury Lawyers, the initiative encouraged patrons to make voluntary contributions in lieu of parking fees, with all proceeds benefiting the local food bank.
“By voluntarily paying for parking, downtown visitors not only supported local businesses but also raised more than $12,000 for Kawartha Food Share,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “This one simple gesture turned into a powerful act of giving that will make a real difference for those in need.”
Town Ward Councillors Alex Bierk and Joy Lachica echoed the mayor’s sentiments, calling the overwhelming response a reflection of Peterborough’s “compassionate, giving” community.
Bill Wolfe of Wolfe Personal Injury Lawyers said the firm was proud to partner with the city again. “These funds, through the support of Kawartha Food Share, will help reduce food insecurity throughout the region.”
Kawartha Food Share provides assistance to 14,000 people each month through 36 member agencies and supports 17,000 schoolchildren in 51 area schools with breakfast and nutrition programs.
“We are very thankful for the continued support of the City of Peterborough and the wonderful citizens who visited and shopped downtown this holiday season,” said Ashlee Aitken, General Manager of Kawartha Food Share. “This donation will allow us to purchase much-needed nutritious food items for community members in need.”
The free holiday parking program has been in place since 2003, raising a total of $251,627.65 for Kawartha Food Share over the past two decades.
