James Gallant, a 30-year-old inmate at Warkworth Institution, died while in custody, the Correctional Service of Canada has confirmed.
Gallant had been serving a sentence of nine years, nine months, and 19 days, which began on June 16, 2017.
The inmate’s next of kin have been notified, according to the CSC.
As is standard practice, the CSC will review the circumstances surrounding the death. In addition, CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified to ensure a thorough investigation.
No further details about the death have been released at this time.
