The Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) has been honoured with the Ontario Museum Association’s Award of Excellence in Special Projects for its work on the exhibition To Honour and Respect: Gifts from Michi Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales, 1860.
The award, presented on November 22nd, recognizes innovative projects that advance the museum field. The exhibition, created in partnership with Hiawatha First Nation, the Mississauga Nation, and the Royal Collection Trust, featured 13 birch bark baskets loaned from the Royal Collection Trust. These artifacts were crafted by women from Hiawatha First Nation and gifted to the Prince of Wales during his 1860 visit.
The project emphasized traditional quillwork, Michi-Saagiig Nishnaabemowin language, and cross-cultural understanding, fostering intergenerational connections and cultural revitalization.
Located at 300 Hunter St. E. in Peterborough, the PMA continues to promote local heritage through programs, events, and exhibitions.
