With the holiday season approaching, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is once again joining forces with local law enforcement agencies to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
Leslie Kirton, Community Leader for MADD Canada, joined members of the OPP and Peterborough Police Services last week for the kickoff to the Festive RIDE Campaign, which will see an increased police presence on local roadways throughout the holidays.
Kirton has been part of these efforts for over a decade and for her the cause is personal. At 19, she was struck by an impaired driver who had previously been convicted four times and was told by doctors that she’d never walk again.
Kirton says when someone makes the decision to drive impaired, the consequences can affect a lot of people.
This year, Kirton is urging people to make safe choices during the festive season. Whether it’s alcohol, cannabis, or prescription drugs, she warns that impaired driving remains a significant threat to public safety.
At the end of the day, one bad decision can change lives forever – the choice to drive sober is one we all can make to ensure a safer, happier holiday season for everyone.
