Officers from the Peterborough County Ontario Provincial Police have charged five individuals with impaired driving-related offences during the first days of the 2024 Festive R.I.D.E. campaign.
On Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m., a Peterborough County officer stopped a vehicle speeding on Highway 7 in Otonabee-South Monaghan Township. The driver, from Nepean, provided a breath sample, resulting in a “Fail.” He is due in court on Jan. 7, 2025.
Later that evening, at 8:00 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle in a ditch on Highway 7 in Asphodel-Norwood Township. A 20-year-old from Douro-Dummer Township, was found attempting to drive the vehicle back onto the road. Breath test results led to charges, including operation while impaired, novice driver and young driver with blood alcohol above zero, and failure to notify a change of address.
Just after midnight on Nov. 23, officers attended another vehicle in a ditch on the Highway 115 on-ramp in Cavan-Monaghan Township. A 24-year-old from Douro-Dummer Township was arrested for operation while impaired after signs of alcohol impairment were observed.
Also on the 23rd, an officer on Highway 115 clocked a vehicle traveling at 166 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. The driver, who is from Newcastle, provided a breath sample resulting in a “Fail.”
On Nov. 24, officers found a vehicle in a ditch on Yankee Line in Selwyn Township at 2:30 p.m. The driver, A 53-year-old from Ennismore, was arrested and charged with operation while impaired.
Each accused had their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for seven days.
The OPP urges motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs by arranging for a designated driver, public transit, or staying overnight. Impairment of any level can compromise judgement and endanger lives.
