The Cobourg Cougars are stepping up to help Northumberland kids in need through another team-up with the Five Counties Children’s Centre.
This will mark the second year for the “Cougars for Kids” event, with the goal of helping to support kids’ treatment services in the area.
Five Counties program manager Elizabeth Carmichael tells us excitement is building for the big game.
This year’s game is described as a matinee affair, set for Saturday, Nov. 16, with the Cougars taking on the Buffalo Jr. Sabres at the Cobourg Community Centre.
The puck drop is at 3:30 p.m., but pre-game fun with Five Counties gets started at 3 p.m.
“At the end of the day, we’re not just a hockey club,” says Erika Seggie, director of business operations with the Cobourg Cougars. “While our goal is to win on the ice, the Cougars also want to contribute and assist the community off the ice.
“Teaming up again for Cougars for Kids is a great way to do this and spotlight the incredible work that Five Counties does to support kids and families in our community.”
Game tickets are available via the Cobourg Cougars website. For every ticket sold, the Cougars are donating $2 to Five Counties. All proceeds will help the organization with treatment services for local kids.
Kids under age 12 accompanied by an adult and wearing a team jersey or Five Counties’ clothing get into the game for free.
Carmichael says hopes are high for the second event.
Five Counties adds that the plan is for the Cougars for Kids event to be a “family affair,” with many clients and parents taking part or watching from the stands.
Five Counties’ kids will also be part of a behind-the-scenes experience at the game. Some of the action includes opportunities for a pre-game pep talk to players and being part of the broadcast crew.
A Five Counties’ family is also doing the ceremonial pre-game puck drop.
Pre-game fun includes face painting, “giant Lego” and more, for the entire family, adds Five Counties. A silent auction fundraiser, door prizes, and a sledge hockey demonstration are also in the works.
