Several local athletes are bringing home medals from the World Box Lacrosse Championships in Utica, New York.
Lakefield’s Thomas Hoggarth helped the Haudenosaunee secure bronze on Saturday with two goals and an assist in the 11-6 win. He finished the tournament with 15 goals and six assists.
Peterborough natives Zach Currier and Jake Withers helped Canada secure gold in the men’s tournament, defeating the USA 13-7 in yesterday’s final. Currier scored a goal in the win, while Withers dominated in the face-off circle. Peterborough Laker Matt Gilray was also on the Canadian team while Lakers goalie Drew Hutchison, who lives in Otonabee, was a member of the silver medal-winning American squad. Canada has won all six gold medals since the tournament’s inception in 2003 and has never lost a game.
In the historic first-ever Women’s World Box Lacrosse Championship, the host USA defeated Canada 10-7 in the gold medal game. Peterborough’s Erica Evans made her mark in a big way, leading Canada to silver. Evans, who led the tournament in goals, assists, and points, racked up 33 goals, 22 assists, and 55 points, 11 goals and 16 points ahead of any other player. With teams from ten countries participating, she set the bar high as the leading scorer in the inaugural championship, cementing her place in the history books.
