The bond between Ireland and Peterborough has always been great, but next year it will open a whole new chapter.
Celebrations are planned through the Nine Ships 1825 Bicentennial Project to commemorate 200 years since the ‘Peter Robinson Irish Emigration’.
Consulate General of Ireland, Janice McGann, was in the city on Tuesday and says it’ll be a great time but also one that should involve some learning.
Maureen Crowley is a Director on the Nine Ships Board and says it’s really key to mark these types of milestones.
The ‘Peter Robinson Irish Emigration’ saw 2,024 men, women, and children embark from Cobh, County Cork, Ireland in 1825 on nine ships bound for what was then known as Lower Canada and Upper Canada. This emigration scheme was organized through the British Government and led by Peter Robinson who resided in Upper Canada at the time. Through this experiment, the migrants were ultimately settled in what are now the municipalities of Peterborough County, Peterborough City and City of Kawartha Lakes.
