Peterborough will be well represented at the upcoming World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, with three locals involved with the Canadian team.
Allison Daley will lead the team as Head Coach, Lexi Jenkins will be on the field as a player, and Jocelyn Lemay will be hard at work behind the scenes as team manager.
The roster for the team was unveiled earlier this week, following a selection process that spanned over a year. Initial regional camps were held in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, narrowing the pool of athletes from 43 to 30, with a final training session held in Burlington. From there, Daley and her coaching staff made the difficult decision to select the 22 athletes who will don the Maple Leaf in Hong Kong.
Among the standout players is Jenkins, a strong midfielder who attended Crestwood Secondary School and played for the Kawartha Women’s Lacrosse team. Coach Daley, who is also a former Team Canada goalie, praised Jenkins for her exceptional athleticism, speed, and relentless work ethic.
Daley emphasized the importance of selecting not just skilled players, but also individuals who exhibit leadership and are great ambassadors for the sport and our country.
Reflecting on her time as a player with Team Canada, Daley said she couldn’t help but get emotional when the time came to inform each player that they would be representing the nation at the tournament, describing it as a full-circle moment.
The World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship will take place from August 15th to 24th.
