June 6th, 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
D-Day was the largest invasion ever, with 156,000 Allied troops landing by sea and air on five beaches in Normandy, France. This marked the beginning of the Allied campaign to free Western Europe, defeat Nazi Germany, and end World War II.
PtboToday.ca sat down with Doug Alkenbrack, whose uncle Wesley Alkenbrack, landed on Juno beach 80 years ago. Wes was enlisted in the 34th Royal Canadian Artillery Unit.
Many years later, Wes made his way back to Juno beach.
Doug has also paid a visit to Juno beach, which he recommends many Canadians do too.
Wes was also a poet. Doug read for us his poem titled ‘The 6th of June’.
