Some teachers unions are skeptical about whether Ontario’s plan to limit cellphone use in classrooms will improve matters.
Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation President Karen Littlewood adds that teachers are hesitant to take away students’ phones because they would be responsible if the devices are lost, damaged or stolen.
Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith says he has heard praise from all sides, including student union leaders who acknowledge the use of phones has become an issue.
He says the new policy was brought in after hearing constant feedback from all over.
These steps are aimed at eliminating distractions in the classroom, says Smith, giving teachers a bit more clarity on how they can handle different situations.
Access to all social media networks will also be banned. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation doesn’t think a cellphone ban will change anything.
