Peterborough native Porter Martone has emerged as a hero for Canadian hockey fans, leading Team Canada to a stunning gold medal victory at the U18 World Hockey Championship in Finland. In a thrilling final match against the USA, Canada secured a 6-4 win, claiming their first gold medal since 2021.
Martone’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament was instrumental in Canada’s success. The talented forward finished with an impressive 5 goals and 17 points in 7 games, earning him a well-deserved spot on the tournament’s all-star team. Notably, Martone set a new Canadian record for most points in the tournament, surpassing the previous record held by Chicago Blackhawks rookie sensation, Connor Bedard.
However, Martone’s record was short-lived as his teammate Gavin McKenna stole the spotlight in the final game. McKenna’s hat-trick, along with an assist, propelled him to a new Canadian record of 20 points in the tournament.
Although the single tournament points record went to McKenna, Martone still made history, setting the Canadian record for most assists in a single tournament (12) as well as most career assists (15) and points (23).
Martone, the only returning member from last year’s bronze medal-winning team, now sets his sights on earning a spot on Canada’s World Junior team. With this year’s tournament scheduled to take place in Ottawa from December 26th to January 5th, Martone aims to continue his remarkable journey on the international stage.
Martone’s dedication, leadership, and skill have not only made his hometown of Peterborough proud but have also earned him the admiration of hockey fans across the nation.
