In a bid to reduce distractions from learning in Ontario schools, the Province has directed that students be prohibited from using their cellphones during instructional time.
Come September, students in kindergarten to Grade 6 who have phones will be required to keep them on silent and out of sight for duration of the school day. Meanwhile, Grade 7 to 12 students can have their phones with them but their use will be permitted during instruction only with their teacher’s permission.
Local Catholic school board communications manager Galen Eagle says cellphone use is currently limited in schools but notes this “very clear guidance” bolsters that.
Eagle adds anything that backs teachers’ demands that students’ cellphones be put away is a good thing.
Meanwhile, the Province also unveiled a strict anti-vaping policy for schools – another measure welcomed by the Catholic school board.
