Peterborough Public Health has received notice of a local laboratory-confirmed case of whooping cough.
Also known as pertussis, whooping cough is a bacterial respiratory infection spread through contact with droplets produced by an infected person’s sneeze or cough. Infants under age one and pregnant people are at the greatest risk of severe illness from the ailment.
Signs and symptoms include a runny nose, mild fever and cough followed in one to two weeks by whooping sound when breathing in, difficulty breathing and vomiting. Those exhibiting symptoms should isolate immediately and seek treatment.
