With the major fire damage done to an apartment building in Havelock, a total of 18 people were displaced.
The blaze happened on Tuesday night at a Peterborough Housing Corporation complex on George Street East.
Officials say temporary accommodations have been secured, but work is underway to find more permanent housing options.
“This has been a devastating experience for our residents and for the entire Havelock community. I send them my most sincere sympathies for their trauma and loss,” said Hope Lee, Interim CEO of Peterborough Housing Corporation. “I want to recognize the heroic efforts of our first responders who managed to get everyone out of the building safely and contain the fire despite difficult conditions. Thank you for your bravery and expertise.”
Lee also thanked the Havelock community and residents from neighbouring areas for their remarkable response and support of the displaced people.
